“Marching for R U OK? was my way of showing that I’m here for you and I’m the voice you may not have”

Fearless friend Courtney Ellis shares why she marched for R U OK?

The 2019 Gay and Lesbian Sydney Mardi Gras Parade saw 40 ‘Fearless Friends’ supporting R U OK?’s presence in the march, and served as a visual reminder to look out for the signs that someone might be doing it tough.

Among the legendary supporters was Courtney Ellis.

What motivated you to march with R U OK? at the 2019 Mardi Gras Parade?

R U OK? is a great charity that is very close to home. 4 years ago, I lost a very special friend to suicide; she was one of the most beautiful, outgoing & carefree people I knew. She showed no visible signs of being sad or alone.

It was then I decided I NEVER wanted anyone to feel like they were alone.

As a member of the LGBTQI community you can feel like you're alone and have no voice. Me marching was my way of showing that I'm here for you and I'm the voice you may not have.

Our theme this year was ‘Fearless Friends’. What do you believe makes someone a Fearless Friend?

A fearless friend to me is someone who just knows out of the blue when you need a message, a hug or just a laugh at the silliest things.

Is there a Fearless Friend who has been there for you? What would you like to say to them?

There are many! Thank you for your love, support and encouragement to always be me, you will always be my best friend.
