TOM DERICKX ANNOUNCES SUPPORT FOR R U OK?

hello • Apr 16, 2019

Having made the successful transition from professional AFL player to musician, now vocalist and guitarist of his band KAYEX, Tom has seen the pressures faced by colleagues across a variety of sectors and know life’s ups and downs do not discriminate.

“I am proud to join R U OK?, as looking out for those around me is something I am really passionate about.” Said Derickx.

“I want to help people not be afraid or embarrassed to reach out and start the conversation with someone they feel might be struggling with life. I believe vulnerability is a huge sign of strength and I hope to break down the stigma associated with mental illness.”

R U OK? have welcomed Tom’s support and hope it will shine a light on the role we can all play in supporting a loved one or colleague who is showing signs of struggling with life.

"We are all human and we all go through life’s challenges. It’s ok to acknowledge the fact that those around us will likely need our support at some point.” said Katherine Newton, Campaign Director at R U OK? “We are grateful Tom is passionate about spreading the R U OK? message – helping us all to start a meaningful conversation with someone we’re worried about.

“We need to understand that we won’t always be able to fix someone’s problems – but we can listen, help guide them towards professional support and find ways to help them manage the load. We need to let people know they can speak up, and that support is out there."

R U OK? Day is a national day of action, held on the second Thursday of September each year. But every day is the day to start a conversation. Conversation tips and crisis numbers can be found at www.ruok.org.au
