Meet Gayle

hello • Aug 05, 2018

R U OK? supporter Gayle shared his poem 'Depression', a reflection on his own experiences, when he checked in with the Conversation Convoy in Devonport

Depression

Depression is a word that we've all so often heard
And to think it could cause suicide to most would seem absurd
But for those who've had to suffer, no matter how they tried
There are times they wouldn't care if they lived or if they died

You lose your sense of humour and concentration too
And cannot now be bothered with the things you love to do
You feel that you're a failure and never get things right
And feel so sad and lonely as you toss and turn at night

But in some brighter moments a little sunshine filters through
And you make some resolutions that you might start your life anew
But then the clouds come back again much darker than before
And your demons get inside of you and haunt you even more

But there are people out there who really know their stuff
They know how to help you when things get really tough
You may need medication and counselling as well
But you will live your life again and put behind those days of living hell

So do not suffer secretly go and see your own GP
He will refer you to the people you need to see
With these good folk to help you, you will be greatly pleased
With their love and guidance the pain will be slowly eased

And your family and your true friends will be always there for you.
They'll be there to help you and see that you get through.
So for those who have not suffered, just remember to be kind.
For no one knows what's happening in another person's mind.
